1st International Asia-Oceania Symposium on Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering (AOFSM’1 2015)

The 1st International Asia-Oceania Symposium on Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering (AOFSM’1 2015) took place in Suzhou, China, on October 9-10, 2015, and was organized by the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, and the Asia-Oceania Association for Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering, in conjunction with the National Engineering Research Center of Flame Retardant Materials, BIT, Beijing.

The major topics covered in this symposium were new developments in flame-retardant materials, flame retardants, fire protection of materials and components, as well as their applications in transportation, construction, electrical engineering and electronics. Advances in fire safety regulations, methods and standards for testing fire behaviour, smoke and toxicity of materials and components were discussed. Invited international renowned experts and scholars presented the latest academic progress and engineering applications in the field of fire safety materials.

The symposium was very well attended with over 200 participants. The program consisted of 7 plenary, 24 keynote lectures, 14 presentations and 42 posters, which gave an excellent overview of current status and future developments in flame-retardant materials and technologies.

The conference focus was on flame retardant mechanisms, pyrolysis (mechanisms, modelling), flame retardant systems based on intumescence (microencapsulation, ceramifiable compounds), nanocomposites (montmorillonites, graphene oxide, LDH, carbon nanotubes, POSS), as well as synergists (sulfenamides) and smoke suppressants. Besides a series of presentations covering bio-based polymers and green flame retardants, thermosets (epoxies, phenolics and unsaturated polyesters), thermoplastics (polycarbonates, polyamides, polystyrene, polyolefins) and polyurethane foams were addressed. Other presentations dealt with low smoke cables and coupling systems for magnesium hydroxide with EVA.

Fire regulations and testing were another important topic in this conference. The new micro combustion calorimetry (MCC) and its relevance to better predict the UL 94 classification (V2 vs. V0) was discussed. For transportation, the latest developments in standardisation for the fire protection on railway vehicles in Europe (EN 45545-2: Requirements for fire behaviour of materials and components) were presented. In two papers, fire tests with thermal insulation systems for facades and sandwich panels and the current debate on fire safety were discussed. Last not least, an overview on status and trends in smoke gas toxicity regulations and tests showed the growing international interest in this field.
