In January 2013, the European Union Research Project Phoenix “Synergic combination of high performance flame retardant based on nano-layered hybrid particles as real alternatives to halogen based flame retardant additives” has been launched.
The project is funded under the European Seventh Framework Programme FP7 and will take three years (2013 – 2016). The budget amounts to € 7.0 mio. (EC contribution € 5.1 mio.). The Consortium consists of 1 coordinator and 14 partners from 8 countries (9 SMEs, 2 research institutes, 2 universities, and 2 large companies).
The objectives of this project are to find new sustainable, non-halogenated flame retardant additives based on nano-layered structures and modified lignins for electrical and electronic (E&E) applications under consideration of miniaturisation and higher temperatures in both processing and use in thermoplastic and thermoset applications.
The new, innovative processing routes will provide solutions to the demands of the EU industry in finding cost-effective and sustainable alternatives to existing halogenated flame retardants. These alternatives will allow simultaneously a significant improvement of mechanical properties and processability. New compounding techniques such as the “Nanodirekt” process, and innovative systems, such as ultrasound mixing systems coupled to extrusion and injection equipment, will assure high nanoparticles dispersion in the polymer nano-composites and in the final pieces, thus achieving optimal properties.
Simulation and modelling of compounding processes for the preparation of optimal nano-composites will prevent the formation of agglomerates and allow optimal dispersion of the nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. The achievement of these results will represent a significant advantage to the participating SMEs and in turn to the end-users demanding high-performance environmentally friendly flame retardant materials to manufacture high-performance parts.
