Flame Retardants
The various flame retardant systems
Flame retardants are, chemically speaking, a group of very diverse substances which may strongly differ in their chemical and physical properties, theri mode of action, toxicology and environmental behaviour. They have only one effect in common – they reduce the flammability of materials.
The flame retardants are grouped according to the chemical elements that provide their effectiveness:
Bromine, chlorine, phosphorous, nitrogen, aluminium and magnesium are the most important elements.
